Creation of Kuriketto and the Unicorn Super Pow Chop!

Before the Holidays of December my friend Diana told me about The Custom Toy Show event they were hosting at their store Dream in Plastic. And of course I had to be a part of the fun! Inspired by one of Diana's birthday cakes I decided to make a decapitated Unicorn.

But since I dislike making my life easy when it comes to my craft I added a cloth doll, Kuriketto, to the mix.

I started with Kuriketto first since I had to order the fabric for the Unicorn and it takes about 2 weeks to receive. I worked with a current doll pattern I developed and modified it slightly.

First step was to start with her face. I did a rough sketch as seen below.

After I got the shape I wanted I rendered them out in Illustrator.

I printed them out and got them ready to be ironed on. Thankfully my printer decided to play nice.

After her face was set I started spooling her hair and sewed her completely up.

Then I filled her with my favorite polyfil made by Fairfield World.

At this point she needs her nose, which I hand tack on and her skirt. Her hair is not styled.

While in this week long plus process of finishing up Kuriketto my Unicorn material arrives. I have been working on the pattern in between constructing Kuriketto. Normally a new pattern, like the Unicorn's, will take me up to 2 weeks to develop before going to final fabric. Here is a picture of the Unicorn being sewn.

Now to the hand glittering. This is by far the most favorite thing to do... I think I have a glittering problem ;D

The glitter can take up to 16 hours or more to dry. Especially on fabric. At this point I was starting to panic because the show was only days away and I still had so much to do to finish Kuriketto. I spent an entire day detailing her hair made of yarn and putting on last minute accessories.

I'm happy I got the piece finished! It's currently being shown at Dream In Plastic in Beacon, NY

Holiday Fun

For this Holiday Season I have created Yeti Henry.

He is soft and cuddly and is sugar cookie scented! He comes with a handcrafted cinnamon ornament and hand knitted scarf.

In addition to having my toys and ornaments being sold at Dream in Plastic, The CW Elf Pop-Up Shop is also selling my creations.

I'm still recovering from lack of sleep but realizing this was all worth it!

Bizarro Henry

When cupcake baking goes horribly wrong and opens a door to a parallel universe.

Bizarro Henry stands approx. 18 inches tall with his bib inscribed "I punch kisses" in Japanese. He holds a dark and sinister gingerbread scented cupcake that he quietly eats as he plots a way to take over the world.

Po-Doh San is Finally Done!!

It has been forever since my last update! I can not believe how fast time flies.

I have been busy with my singer sewing machine and finally got down to business with Po-Doh San. He was a bit of a challenge at first due to trying to figure out his mouth pattern, but I finally got it. He can open his mouth! And... he is cotton candy scented!!!

Po-Doh San is also made from fabric leavin's of my previous project and other projects which makes him even more special.

I also have completed Clyde for the Community Cat Coalition for the big animal parade at the end of this past April. This was my first furry human size project! The picture I took is bad, but you can see more pics at Community Cat Coalition

Now to get ready for my two upcoming shows starting mid-August!! I will keep you posted!

Mania and a Painting Completed in 3 Days

I have been painting like a person who is possessed for the past 3 days. As you all know my show is this coming weekend and I wanted to show some new work. So I sat down and completed my dear Sadie for the show. (Please see info in previous post)

I have had this canvas stretched and sitting on my floor for a couple of months now looking for some inspiration, which I finally go this past Tuesday.

First Painting in 3 Years - The Burning Tree

It's been a long time since I last created a painting. I am very excited and very nervous. I wonder what will come out of these finger tips.

I am going to take you through my process:

I have decided not to bore people with the canvas stretching. After I stretched the canvas and coated it with gesso, I sketch my tree onto the canvas lightly with a #2 pencil.

I have decided to give this painting an abstract look by using various brush technics. So to protect my tree from this somewhat messy paint technics I plan to use I brush on rubber cement on to the tree I just sketched.

I am careful not go out of the lines that I have sketched. The rubber cement seals the canvas are so that paint is unable to get on this area. I plan on throwing some paint on the canvas that will make texture.

I lightly brush gold paint on to the main area of the canvas. This will be the 'burning' area.

Then I put an extra layer of different colored paints to give a to give the painting more dynamic. I following up with splattering of blue paint.

Meanwhile the area of the tree I do not want painted is safely hiding under the paint.
